On the waters of Lorient
June 19, 2015
Abu Dhabi Volvo Ocean Race.
Lorient marked the penultimate stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race. At this point most if not all of the teams are more than ready to see the finish line as they have taken their bodies to the extreme over the past 9 months both physically and mentally.
It was the day the teams were set to depart for the start of the last leg, setting off from Lorient France, racing to the Hague Netherlands for a 24 hour stop then to the finish line in Gothenburg Sweden.
As we captured the last of the interviews from skipper Ian Walker and his team and waved them off as they departed from the docks in Lorient for the last time, it was now time for us to climb aboard the team rib and follow them as they approached the start line.
As we set off from the historic docks, passing the world war two ship wreck to the right, you couldn’t help but notice the amount of boats that were out in force supporting the race, it was like being part of a naval war film, boats of all kinds whizzing past sent the adrenalin pumping.
As the seven teams ready themselves for the start of the race you could hear the sound of the countdown as it crackles through the speakers, we were now ready to start filming. We are 60 seconds away from the start as we weave around other teams media boats and spectators readying ourselves to capture the start of the race. Having two cameras on board, the RED DRAGON and CANON 1DC we had to be extra careful as we crash down on the waves making sure we steady ourselves for the right shot. And they’re off, we capture the intensity of the start making sure we cover most angles, then as the boats head towards the first Boyd we are told to hold on as we speed and prepare ourselves for the next shot. The Volvo helicopter hovers above, cheers are heard from the teams boats as they pass, spectators crowd the edges of the rock face hoping to catch a glimpse of the race. We are all over the rib positioning ourselves to get the right shot. They come to the last turn and team Abu Dhabi are in fourth, the sails flapper creating this thunderous sound as they make a sharp turn on to the straight. We stick with the boats as they make their final turn, then we say our final goodbyes as the race heads out to the Netherlands. What a day!
